Although it might seem as if any fabric would do for bathroom window curtains and while you do have a good selection, the truth is that some material is simply better and for a number of reasons. For one thing, this room of the house has a significant amount of moisture and humidity so fabric should be easy to clean. In other words, we suggest you avoid any type of fabric that would have to be dry cleaned, instead going with something that you could machine wash and preferably fabric that would come out of the dryer without wrinkles. Now, there are some fabrics for the bathroom that could also be hand washed but because of the extra time and effort involved, it would be best to stick with those that can be machine washed.

Another consideration specific to fabric used to make bathroom window curtains has to do with privacy. Obviously, windows of the bathroom should be covered to keep people from seeing in. Even if your bathroom window were small, perhaps the room has just one window, or neighbors are a distance away, you would still need fabric that could block the outside world if choosing bathroom window curtains only. However, if you wanted to use shutters, blinds, or shades, then choose thicker fabric, possibly something with a darkening panel.

Light is a common problem in most bathrooms so as you look at various possibilities of fabric when shopping for bathroom window curtains, it would be important to consider the amount of light you want or need. Again, if the window is small or the room has just one, then you probably have a problem of low natural light. In this case, the curtains should be made of a lighter fabric. It would also be helpful to choose a light color. Now, if the bathroom has a large window or the room features more than one, you would be able to expand options for the fabric of which the curtains were made.

We wanted to provide you with a few specific options of fabric for bathroom window curtains, along with some of the benefits they provide.

• Cotton – This fabric actually has a number of advantages over other fabrics. For instance, cotton comes in thousands of colors, patterns, and styles so regardless of the look or decorum of the bathroom, you would have a multitude of choices. Additionally, cotton is very affordable so if on a budget, you would have no problem finding an array of possibilities when buying new curtains or even making them,

• Polyester Blends – Similar to cotton, this type of fabric comes in a huge selection and it is cost efficient. However, one of the primary benefits of choosing polyester blend fabric for bathroom window curtains is that this particular fabric is not only machine washable but it does not wrinkle. With this, you could wash the curtains and hang them right back up straight out of the dryer.

• Hemp and Other Natural Fabrics – If you support the “green movement” and prefer a more organic fabric for your bathroom window curtains, hemp would be a good consideration. Typically, material such as this does best in rooms with low moisture levels so if you need to window treatments for a guest bathroom, then hemp would actually be ideal.

• Linen – Finally, linen can be a great fabric for the bathroom although because it is more expensive than some of the other options and it has a richer look, most people go with linen when wanting to achieve more luxurious aesthetics. One advantage of linen is that the fabric is heavy, which can be an energy efficient solution.

The two rooms in the home that are at greatest risk for problems of mold and mildew are the kitchen and bathroom. Both rooms are prone to problems because of the high level of moisture. While the kitchen is one room, the bathroom tends to be at greatest risk. Between moisture coming from hot shower and baths, water splashes from the sink, shower, and tub onto the floor and if not cleaned up, mold and mildew can develop. What makes this a serious problem is that when baseboards, shower curtains, and even bathroom window curtains become wet, mold develops, which contains spores that become airborne, causing big issues with health.

The best step is to prevent problems of mold and mildew in the bathroom, which can be accomplished in a number of ways. First, make sure the room has a good exhaust fan that is used after taking a shower or bath to help eliminate moisture from the air. In addition, any water that gets on the floor should be cleaned up immediately. Then, if you have a fabric shower curtain, be sure to have a quality plastic or vinyl liner to serve as a barrier but also wash the shower curtain often. Then as far as the bathroom window curtains, make sure you choose short curtains rather than those that go all the way to the floor and if they will be hung in a bathroom used often, choose curtains that can be machine washed.

Another thing that would help is during warm months, once you get out of the shower or bath, open the window to allow fresh air inside, which again would help the humidity and moisture dissipate. Remember, mold and mildew can grow quickly so at the first sign of trouble, you need to take action. This means no matter the bathroom surface, you will need a good disinfectant. Bleach mixed with hot water is one of the best options but in the case of black mold, which is very dangerous, it will only lighten the color, not eliminate the mold. For this reason, if you find black mold on the bathroom window curtains or any other items in the bathroom, they would need to be tossed out.

Now, if mold on the curtains is not black or you have an issue with mildew, you may be able to salvage your bathroom window curtains. In this case, if the fabric can be washed in bleached, then you could fill the bathtub with a mixture of one three cups of bleach to one gallon of hot water. Soak the curtains for at least 24 hours, rinse, and then launder normally. If the bathroom curtains cannot be washed in bleach, you could choose a non-bleach product and follow the same instructions, or choose to simply replace them. Obviously, the goal from that point would be to prevent the problem in the first place, which is possible.

By keeping the floor, shower curtain, and bathroom curtains clean and void of mold and mildew, the room would not only look better but more importantly, be safer to everyone in the home, even pets. Mold, especially black mold is not something to play around with so if you ultimately needed to purchase new curtains, that would be the best route. That coupled with prevention would ensure you have a beautiful but also healthy bathroom to enjoy.

Toile fabric is something that can really make a splash when used as a bathroom curtain. They are called toile due to the intricate patterns repeated on the solid backgrounds, that’s where they get their name. Toile really doesn’t mean anything more than cloth in French but the term has stuck because it was really first introduced a long time ago in France. The patterns are typically either floral in nature or very themed ranging from old time scenic settings to very detailed pastoral scenes. The great part about using these type of curtains in the bathroom is that the entire bathroom doesn’t have to be “toile” themed and they can bring life to that boring bathroom wall.

Let’s get into the details a little more on toile fabrics. First thing is the background has to be a solid conitinous color. These are typically very natural in appearance but don’t have to necessarily be drab. They often come in much darker solid colors. Now on to the prints. The prints themeselves are typically monochrome but can also be multicolored. If you are trying to keep that antique look rolling though, stick with the monochrome. The key is that the prints and the background need to be contrasting and that’s what makes these curtains pop. If the background is dark, the toile print should be in a strong contrasting light color (typically a very lighter shade of the background). If the background is light, the toile print needs to be a strong contrasting dark color (typically in the same shade). Using these fabrics in the bathroom, depending on what type of print you select, can bring either a good comforting feeling in a very casual atmosphere or let you bathe in the lap of luxury with an elegant appeal.

One thing to keep in mind is that you can make these curtains quite easily by simply buying the fabric from a local store or online. Don’t get confused though as you might here them called a couple of things. If you look around online you will want to be looking for either Toile fabric or Toile de Jouy Fabric. Some just keep the whole “de Jouy” part because of where it was originally made, in a little village just southwest of Paris in a factory named Jouy-en-Josas. There were other manufacturers that came along around that time but this was their birthplace.

Toile Fabric

Pink toile fabric is something that’s certainly in style. Using this in your bathroom as a curtain can add some peace and tranquility and really let you unwind after a long hard day, or possibly start the day in a very calming fashion. The Jamestown baby pink fabric depicts a scene straight out of the countryside where a family is softly relaxing in their old world style.

If you are looking for something with a little more stature and poise you could go with a blue toile fabric. These can really make a statement in the right bathroom. If you choose to go with the solid blue background with a statuesque print for the foreground, this can really depict a sense of style and masculinity in a larger bathroom. If your bathroom is a bit smaller but you want something distinct to hang as curtains, you could go the opposite with a creme or white colored background and a stronger blue print as the toile like the Jamestown Blue Toile fabric.

There are many different variations to this french toile fabric so if you are just starting to look around and you see some that don’t really catch your eye, keep looking. Pink and blue are certainly some of the more popular colors to be used in bathrooms, but don’t stop there as toile fabrics are made with many, many different designs and colors so you could definitely find something that would fit the design theme you have going for your relaxation moments in your private bathroom.
