The most important part of new bathroom window curtains is the installation.  Okay, most people think you simply pick a spot for the brackets, put the rod up, and then hang the curtains but in truth, this leads to an array of problems.  For one thing, you want your new curtains to look as if a professional had hung them, which in turn makes the entire room look amazing.  As you will see from the information in this article, installing new bathroom curtains is not a major undertaking but it does require following proper steps.

The most important thing is finding the header or wall stud through which the screw for the brackets would be inserted.  Typically, studs are evenly placed on either side of a bathroom window when the home is built but in older homes or in newer homes with a poor builder, this may not be the case.  Therefore, you may need to use hollow wall anchors.  You cannot drill directly into the drywall since this material is not designed to hold weight.  With an anchor, a tube made of plastic is inserted into the drywall and then into the plastic tube, the screw for the bracket inserted.  That way, if the studs are not evenly spaced, you can place the brackets so they are, regardless.

In most homes, the bathroom window height is the same as the door height.  Therefore, you would need to install the curtains so the top is even with the top of the window.  However, if your bathroom window happens to be lower than the door, simply adjust where the brackets would be installed so once the new bathroom window curtains are hung, they are even to the top of the door.  This creates a much more balanced and cohesive look, which helps pull the entire appearance of the room together.

Another thing to consider is that if the window is extremely narrow, you can create the illusion of width simply by inserting the brackets so they are drilled further out on the wall away from the window frame.  Again, once you hang your new bathroom window curtains, the fabric would extend much further out from the frame, immediately making the room look larger.  There are a number of secrets such as this that can enhance installing of bathroom curtains so if you have a “problem window”, do not worry as solutions are always available.

One last note is that if you have an old home whereby the walls are made of plaster, you will need to be extremely cautious when hanging brackets for your new curtains.  Since plaster is actually a very fragile material, a small drill would need to be used to drill a pilot hole, followed by using a slightly larger drill so you can get a plastic wall anchor inserted.  For a project such as this, make sure to take your time so you end up with a strong hold for the curtains but also no damage to the plaster wall.

The key to beautiful bathroom curtains starts with correct measurements.  Unfortunately, one of the most common mistakes is people not measuring right and then purchasing or making curtains that once hung look horrible.  Even being off one-half inch can make a big difference in your new curtains looking professionally hung or sloppy.  Once you obtain the appropriate measurements, you would then have the information needed to buy curtains that will fit perfectly.  The outcome is a gorgeous look that helps transform the appearance of the entire room.

Before anything, get a piece of paper, pencil, and measuring tape.  Keep in mind that you want a flexible tape opposed to a rule or yardstick.  If wanted, you can print out an actual measuring guide or simply write down exact numbers as you take them.  It is also important that you measure all the windows in the bathroom.  Even if they look to be the same size or are supposed to be the same size, they could be off enough to matter.

Then, make sure the measurements are for the look wanted.  In other words, if you want to install the brackets on the inside of the frame then you would measure on the inside but if you wanted the brackets to be installed on the outside of the frame, the measurements would need to be taken on the outside.  You also want to round the measurements taken to the nearest 1/8-inch, always rounding up, not down.  Following these guidelines, the next step is to get the numbers.

Now, if you plan to install the brackets on the inside of the frame, you could measure using the length on the inside of the casement or if preferred, the outside of the casement, as well as from the top of the casement to the desire length, whether short or long.  If you want to install panels, it would be important to know they come in lengths from 45 to 95 inches although 84 inches is considered standard.  However, if you want shorter curtains, the option that usually looks best in bathroom, measure to just below the bottom frame.  For width, measurements would be taken from within the window frame.

If you prefer to install the brackets on the outside of the frame, then you would still take the measurements from the top of the frame to the desired length, again remembering to round up to the nearest 1/8-inch.  However, in this case the measurements for width would be taken from the outside of the bathroom window frame.  By using measurements for your new bathroom window curtains on the inside of the frame, once the curtains are hung, the frame would show whereas using measurements on the outside, the bathroom curtains would hide the frame.  One other important note is that even if you think you got the numbers right for each bathroom window, we strongly suggest you take them three times to be 100% certain.

Just a few other things to consider is that if you decide to hang long bathroom curtains, the bottom of the panels should be one-inch off the floor.  In addition, be sure short or long curtain panels are two to three times the actual width measurement.  In other words, if the window measured 32 inches, you need to buy curtains that are 64 to 96 inches wide, which is what provide enough material to close the curtains but then when open, have beautiful pleating.  Finally, if the window is narrow, you can create a wider look simply by hanging the curtain hardware three to four inches beyond the frame so ultimately more curtain material would be spread over the window area.

In the first part of installing bathroom window curtains, you managed to identify and overcome. Now we can assume that you’ve discovered the correct placement of the mounting brackets for your curtains and are ready to install them.

You should position your bathroom curtain mounting brackets at a 45-degree line off the corner of the existing trim. Most trim is mitred, so by extending the line of the joint and placing the brackets on that line you will get the correct placement. Just go by what looks and feels right to your eye. Copy the bracket position on the other side of the window and drill and mount them in place.

There are literally dozens of methods and configurations for mounting bracket hardware. It’s always wise to read the manufacturer’s instructions then to follow you gut in actually following it. For example if the instructions say to use a level to position the brackets, think about how rational that advice is. Most walls are not completely flat and most windows are not completely level. So by using a level to position them, you will likely end up making your window trim look crooked when it didn’t before. So you have to align the brackets with the trim so it all looks even and level.

Drywall Anchors

When you are selecting a drill bit prior to drilling a hole for the bracket anchor, test the anchor in the empty hole of the drill index. This will let you be sure the hole is a snug fit for the anchor. You are putting in the anchor to ensure that your curtains do not pull the brackets down. So it would be a shame to end up with a hole that’s slightly too big and tears through the drywall anyway. Finally, when you’re mounting your brackets, you need to be picky, exact and concentrated. While you may have disregarded some of the manufacturer instructions earlier, there is use for being precise. This will ensure that your have curtain brackets that will support your bathroom curtains for years to come.

Now that the brackets are in place, all you need to do is place the curtains. This is definitely the easy part. If you don’t already have a curtain rod, now is the time to get one. Usually you want it to be an inch or two longer than the length of the brackets. Yes, this part will show through the curtains, but there are many decorative ends you can buy to accent the end of the rod. This will ensure that your bathroom window curtains do not slide off the end and have to be adjusted every day or so.
