While it might not seem as if buying new bathroom curtains would be that big a deal, surprisingly, mistakes are made all the time only to leave the homeowner unhappy.  The truth is that several mistakes are commonly made specific to bathroom window curtains but knowing what they are is the easiest way to avoid them.  The key when updating the bathroom is to have a clear vision of the outcome so the style, color, size, and pattern of the curtains enhances the rooms appearance rather than distract from it.  Of course, in addition to aesthetics, there is also the issue of functionality.

For starters, the most common mistake made is not taking accurate measurements of the window.  It is so important that you measure not once, not twice, but three times to make 100% certain the numbers are exact.  Then, you want to write the measurements down on paper all three times to ensure numbers have not accidentally been transposed.  Additionally, 1/8-inch needs to be added to the final measurement, always rounding up, not down.  This simple step will ensure you buy the exact size.  Keep in mind, you can take measurements on the inside or outside of the window casement depending on if you want the frame to show or not.

Another common mistake associated with bathroom window curtains is not purchasing the right fabric for the best privacy.  Even if risk of prying eyes were minimal, you want to make sure when in the bathroom you have the option of closing the curtains so no one can see in from the outside.  To do this, you would obviously need curtains made of material that is not sheer although if you prefer a sheer curtain you would need to install mini-blinds, shutters, or shades that could be pulled closed while the curtains themselves remain open.

Energy efficiency is also important.  In today’s economy, most people look for new ways to save money, one being with window treatments.  Because energy efficiency is such a big deal, finding bathroom curtains that have a thermal backing is actually easy and, the price is not much more than standard curtains.  With this, the hot afternoon sun or cold winter air would not seep inside the home.  That way, the interior of the bathroom remains comfortable without excess heat or air conditioning being lost.  As a result, you end up with gorgeous windows but also a lower monthly utility bill.

The last mistake we wanted to mention has to do with color and patterns of bathroom windows.  If you plan to have more than one pattern, make sure the background color is not only the same but the hue as well.  Then, if you want patterns, whether geometric, floral, motifs, and so on, keep the size small to medium so ultimately, your new bathroom window curtains do not overwhelm the room but complement the architectural features and other bathroom accessories.  The outcome would be a gorgeous room with the new bathroom curtains being the focal point.

Are you tired of your current bathroom, eager to make a change but not sure what to do?  Something as simple as new bathroom window curtains can help you transform a boring and drab bathroom into anything you want.  In this article, we have provided a couple of examples of what new curtains can do.  However, remember there are literally hundreds of opportunities but hopefully, these examples will inspire you to find the look you ultimately want to achieve.

For the first example, you might consider changing an outdated bathroom into your own tropical oasis.  For this, it all comes down to color and texture.  We suggest you choose a sky blue wall paint, shower curtain of light blue, navy blue, cream, and small splashes of yellow, and then bamboo accessories to bring it all together.  For the window, white plantation shutters with light blue sheers over top would be gorgeous while creating an airy feel.  To enhance the look, you could find similar fabric to the shower curtain to add trim or create tie-backs.

Another example would be creating a bathroom with Shabby Chic decorum.  Although Shabby Chic was highly popular in the 1980s, it has once again grown in popularity, known for being charming and comfortable.  In this case, pastel colors are used, primarily greens, blues, and yellows.  If you were to use any bathroom furniture, is should be distressed and medicine cabinets of white metal are ideal.  As far as bathroom window curtains, a thick white or sage green cotton would be recommended.  However, to support the Shabby Chic style, you could choose a nice textured fabric for both curtains and shower curtain.

The transitional style is another great option, which features deep, rich colors.  Remember, there are hundreds of options for each of the styles mentioned but in the case of transition, you might consider a solid brown shower curtain with small geometric designs of yellow and rust.  As far as accessories, copper or brushed nickel would be perfect along with solid brown rugs.  You would also need to bring in items of yellow and rust to pull the colors from the shower curtain.  Then for the curtains, brown with rust blocks would be gorgeous.  This would give the room a more modern look but also provide the richness that comes from the transitional style.

One last example we wanted to provide is traditional.  We recommend you choose a light yellow for the walls, and a deeper yellow for the rugs.  If the bathroom does not already have crown molding, this could be added in solid white, choosing a thickness to coordinate with the ceiling height.  As far as the shower curtain, solid white with yellow trim or white with yellow dots would work and for the new bathroom window curtains, the same deeper yellow used in the rugs.  Then for accessories, you want to pull in greens and lavenders, whether in the form of artwork, flowers, or ceramic vases.

If you are taking the time to properly decorate and style your bathroom, you should go the extra step of installing proper bathroom window curtains as well.  The days of tacking up an old towel as curtains are over.  Investing the time and effort in proper curtain installation will pay off in the long run.  Following a few tips and tricks to installing your curtains will give you long-lasting beautiful curtains to accent your bathroom.

First, think about your bathroom window for a few minutes.  You can’t just drill a hole and place a curtain rod, calling it installation anymore than you can put a piece of plywood on wheels and call it a car.  The person who built your room did not simply put a hole in the wall, fill it with glass and that makes it a window.  It need support, so they have a very sturdy, small beam that runs along the top of the window.  This is called a header and it supports the window from the weight of the building.  You are supposed to drill your curtain rod directly into the header to give the bathroom window curtains proper support, but this is not always practical since you’re screwing into wood.  If you can mount the curtains in the header you certainly should.  It will be the easiest way and the preferred way of installing the curtains.  But there can be a few setbacks to this plan.

Installing Bathroom Curtains

If your window has a wide trim, the header may actually be shorter than that trim.  But you can’t really destroy the look or your trim to get to the header.  But you also can’t drill into the drywall and hope it can support your curtains.  So this presents a dilemma in your bathroom window curtains experience.  If you can find a stud in the proper place, you can use that to mount your curtains.  But often there will not be one in the place you’re hoping for.  In this case you absolutely have to use hollow-wall anchors.  These will keep the screws from tearing out the drywall.

Positioning of your curtains is important.  Normally your window height will be about the same as your door height.  In that case, mount the curtains even with top of the window.  If your window is much lower than the door, the curtain will have a very heavy and depressing look.  In that case you will get the best look by raising the height of the curtains to provide more balance to the room.  Another bonus to this is that the higher you set the bathroom curtains the farther you can extend the width past the trim without it looking awkward.
