Most people never think of using stencils to dress up basic curtains but the results are incredible.  This is a great way to end up with customized curtains that are exactly what you want but while spending very little money.  Of course, there are many other ways to enhance the appearance of bathroom curtains but we wanted to show you just how great stencils are in giving you a one-of-a-kind look.

Although there are multiple ways to accomplish this, we suggest you start by purchasing a pair of quality bathroom curtains.  For this, you could choose white, off-white, yellow, sage green, sky blue, and other colors but the key is to buy fabric without any texture and preferably curtains made of cotton or a cotton and polyester blend.  That way, the stencils will stick better and stand out to make a lasting impression.

Of course, make sure you take proper measurements of the bathroom window first and then begin shopping.  You will also need to pick out hardware that compliments the curtains but also the stencils and the overall room decorum.  Once you have these purchases done, the fun begins as you shop for stencils to use.  The best place is any hobby store where you will find stencils of various sizes, styles, and designs.  Even quality stencils of medium size typically cost less than $5, making this a great cost efficient solution.

Along with the stencil or stencils, you would need craft paint.  Make sure to purchase paint specifically designed for stenciling but also fabric.  The reason is that stencil paint would absorb into the fabric of the bathroom curtains, becoming a part of the structure.  Because of this, once you finish stenciling the curtains you could machine wash them without the colors fading or the paint dissolving.  Therefore, you end up with beautiful and unique bathroom curtains that will last a long time.

In addition to the stencils and paint, you need special stencil brushes.  Of all expenses, these are probably the most but even then, they are not too costly.  These brushes have a blunt head since the paint is actually dabbed on inside the stencil.  The types of stencil brushes you buy would depend on the look you want to achieve.  If you plan to completely fill in the stencil design on the curtains then you need a wide brush but if you will only be dabbing around the edges or painting on very small stencil designs, then a smaller brush would work.  Additionally, if you will be using multiple colors, it would be best to buy one stencil brush for each color.

A common complaint is that there are not enough bathroom window curtain options for men.  The truth is that if you were to spend time shopping for new curtains, the majority of choices would be geared more toward women than men.  Even curtains in colors men would like often have too many frills to be considered masculine.  Obviously, trying to remodel or redecorate a bathroom that looks masculine and having a problem finding the right curtains can be extremely frustrating but as you will see, it is not impossible to accomplish.

The hardware chosen would also play an important role in achieving a masculine look.  For instance, using the same example above with the gray bathroom curtains, the best solution would be to use a heavy and simple design rod made from hand-forced wrought iron.  Now, another possibility would be brown bathroom curtains that have blocks of green and tan.  Again, this would be stunning but masculine.  For the hardware, a deep bamboo, also in a simple design would work perfect.

Another common mistake associated with bathroom window curtains is not purchasing the right fabric for the best privacy.  Even if risk of prying eyes were minimal, you want to make sure when in the bathroom you have the option of closing the curtains so no one can see in from the outside.  To do this, you would obviously need curtains made of material that is not sheer although if you prefer a sheer curtain you would need to install mini-blinds, shutters, or shades that could be pulled closed while the curtains themselves remain open.

Energy efficiency is also important.  In today’s economy, most people look for new ways to save money, one being with window treatments.  Because energy efficiency is such a big deal, finding bathroom curtains that have a thermal backing is actually easy and, the price is not much more than standard curtains.  With this, the hot afternoon sun or cold winter air would not seep inside the home.  That way, the interior of the bathroom remains comfortable without excess heat or air conditioning being lost.  As a result, you end up with gorgeous windows but also a lower monthly utility bill.

•    Pinch Pleated Bathroom Curtains – If you have a traditional style bathroom, then you would probably prefer pinch pleated curtains.  These curtains are made with permanent pleats, which have actually been stitched into place so even when washed, the pleats never come out.  When shopping for curtains of this type, we suggest you look for those that not only have the pleats stitched but also professionally pressed.  Although you can find a few pinch pleat bathroom curtains designed so the pleats only occur toward the top, most often the pleats run the full length of the curtains for a more cohesive loo.

•    Grommet Top Curtains – In this case, the curtains have been made with grommets at the top, which are large.  Because of this, the curtain rod simply slips through the grommet and then placed onto the brackets.  Grommet top bathroom window curtains are often one color and while somewhat simplistic in style, they have a modern twist that is very attractive.

•    Flowing Curtains – Typically, flowing bathroom curtains are used for casual or traditional bathrooms.  These curtains are usually made from a flowing polyester blend that creates a light and airy look.  Rather than fit over a rod as with other types of bathroom curtains, flowing curtains usually drape over the rod.  Again, these curtains are simple yet they add a touch of charm and elegance.

•    Rod Pocket Curtains – If you want to create a more formal and sophisticated look in your bathroom, rod pocket curtains are an ideal solution.  For these curtains, a pocket of material has been created at that top through which the rod fits.  If wanted, you can purchase rod pocket curtains that have an additional two to three inches of material above the pocket so when pulled open, they have a great look.

•    Tab Top Curtains – The last option we wanted to mention is the tab top bathroom window curtains.  In this case, the design consists of looped tabs of material spaced about every two to four inches apart instead of a pocket.  The curtain rod would simply slip through each tab, which gives the bathroom window a trendy yet casual look.  In addition, tab top curtains are often a popular choice for people who prefer to make bathroom curtains opposed to buying them because they are relatively easy to make.

If you love to sew and you have the time to do so, then you may want to consider making new bathroom window curtains rather than buy them.  In addition to having the opportunity to come up with a look that is unique to you, there is also a sense of accomplishment.  Making your own bathroom curtains opens up tremendous doors of opportunities.  Because you are not limited to what stores have to offer, the sky is truly the limit.

Even if you are not an accomplished seamstress, with so many easy sew patterns on the market, there is no reason you cannot make your own bathroom window curtains.  As with any curtains, whether made or purchased, the number one priority is taking accurate measurements.  That way, you can buy only the actual amount of material needed.  Of course, you would also need to buy hardware to include brackets and curtain rod, and then if you wanted to enhance the appearance of the curtains, embellishments of your choice.

Remember, if you purchase the curtain pattern according to your skill level and you take your time during the process of making the bathroom curtains, you should have no problem whatsoever.  After measuring and then buying the appropriate amount of fabric, you would be ready to get started.  Keep in mind that when buying fabric, always purchase two to three times the width measurement so you have full curtains when opened and full coverage when closed.  In addition, you want to buy nylon thread that will hold and thread in a color that matches the fabric.

While some people prewash fabric prior to making bathroom curtains, this is not necessary.  One benefit of not washing the material before sewing it is that when the curtains are done, they have a clean, crisp look and feel.  However, it would be worthwhile to iron the fabric.  That way, as you work with the chosen pattern, the lines would be straight and much easier to follow and sew.  The material would then be laid flat and cut according to the measurements taken although you need to add one inch all the way around that would be used for hem allowance.  The only exception is that based on the rod diameter, you would also need to allow extra at the top so you can make a pocket that would slip onto the rod with ease.

With the material cut according to the pattern, you want to start by hemming all sides.  With the additional inch, fold it over and sew on the underside so your bathrooms would have a clean hem all the way around.  Again, iron the hems so they lay flat and are tightly in place.  For the top pouch, you would again fold the extra material over, sewing it in place, so you end up with a perfect place to slip the rod when ready to hang.  After the bathroom curtains pieces have been sewn together according the pattern, again iron.  From there, you would slip the material over the rod using the created pocket and if wanted, add tie-backs or simply allow the curtains to hang naturally
