A common complaint is that there are not enough bathroom window curtain options for men.  The truth is that if you were to spend time shopping for new curtains, the majority of choices would be geared more toward women than men.  Even curtains in colors men would like often have too many frills to be considered masculine.  Obviously, trying to remodel or redecorate a bathroom that looks masculine and having a problem finding the right curtains can be extremely frustrating but as you will see, it is not impossible to accomplish.

The hardware chosen would also play an important role in achieving a masculine look.  For instance, using the same example above with the gray bathroom curtains, the best solution would be to use a heavy and simple design rod made from hand-forced wrought iron.  Now, another possibility would be brown bathroom curtains that have blocks of green and tan.  Again, this would be stunning but masculine.  For the hardware, a deep bamboo, also in a simple design would work perfect.

The most important part of new bathroom window curtains is the installation.  Okay, most people think you simply pick a spot for the brackets, put the rod up, and then hang the curtains but in truth, this leads to an array of problems.  For one thing, you want your new curtains to look as if a professional had hung them, which in turn makes the entire room look amazing.  As you will see from the information in this article, installing new bathroom curtains is not a major undertaking but it does require following proper steps.

Remember, when the new bathroom curtains are hung right, not only do they look gorgeous but you also avoid damaging the walls or even window frames from putting the brackets up wrong.  In addition, instead of the curtains falling down or starting to become lopsided, proper installation would allow you to open and shut them daily without any movement.  In other words, doing the installation the right way improves appearance, reduces potential damage, and provides seamless functionality.

The most important thing is finding the header or wall stud through which the screw for the brackets would be inserted.  Typically, studs are evenly placed on either side of a bathroom window when the home is built but in older homes or in newer homes with a poor builder, this may not be the case.  Therefore, you may need to use hollow wall anchors.  You cannot drill directly into the drywall since this material is not designed to hold weight.  With an anchor, a tube made of plastic is inserted into the drywall and then into the plastic tube, the screw for the bracket inserted.  That way, if the studs are not evenly spaced, you can place the brackets so they are, regardless.

In most homes, the bathroom window height is the same as the door height.  Therefore, you would need to install the curtains so the top is even with the top of the window.  However, if your bathroom window happens to be lower than the door, simply adjust where the brackets would be installed so once the new bathroom window curtains are hung, they are even to the top of the door.  This creates a much more balanced and cohesive look, which helps pull the entire appearance of the room together.

Another thing to consider is that if the window is extremely narrow, you can create the illusion of width simply by inserting the brackets so they are drilled further out on the wall away from the window frame.  Again, once you hang your new bathroom window curtains, the fabric would extend much further out from the frame, immediately making the room look larger.  There are a number of secrets such as this that can enhance installing of bathroom curtains so if you have a “problem window”, do not worry as solutions are always available.

One last note is that if you have an old home whereby the walls are made of plaster, you will need to be extremely cautious when hanging brackets for your new curtains.  Since plaster is actually a very fragile material, a small drill would need to be used to drill a pilot hole, followed by using a slightly larger drill so you can get a plastic wall anchor inserted.  For a project such as this, make sure to take your time so you end up with a strong hold for the curtains but also no damage to the plaster wall.

Not all bathroom windows need elaborate curtains or window treatments.  Many bathrooms have rippled glass or frosted glass that preserves your privacy and lets in natural light.  Spending all sorts of money on curtains for these windows would be difficult to justify the expense since they’d really never be closed.  But the room still looks bare and not quite done.  Using a window scarf could be your best option.

A window scarf is very similar to complete bathroom curtains but instead of having the ability to open and close them, they simply drape around the window.  You have probably seen this used in decorating in conjunction with regular curtains but they are just as lovely when used alone.  Basically the window scarf is a narrow strip of fabric that runs along the top and side of the window.

As an alternative to bathroom window curtains, window scarves are much simpler to purchase or to make one yourself.  A window scarf can be purchased at any discount or department store in any particular length or color.  If you look at several stores and can’t find what you want, just run over to your local fabric store.  There you can find any color, pattern, or fabric imaginable and simply buy a handful of yards to make your own.  If you have a sewing machine you can simply sew a simple hem and you have the perfect window scarf.  If you don’t have a sewing machine you can use a hem that requires no sewing, both will be equally attractive.

Once you have your window scarf you will need to find and choose brackets for it.  Keep in mind that unlike with traditional bathroom window curtains, the brackets will be exposed so you probably need to find a good decorative bracket to use.  The wrought iron bracket is a very distinct look and ideally suited to a bathroom environment.  Almost any bracket will do, though wood wouldn’t be suggest since it will likely warp because of the damp conditions.

Now that you have brackets, you have a few options for hanging the window scarf.  You can use a curtain rod and gently drape it over it, or you can simply hang it between the two brackets.  Another very decorative option is putting a third bracket in the middle of the window and placing the window scarf in between the three for a more draping look.  If using an unhemmed fabric, be sure to pin or glue the raw ends so that they do not show.  In general, window scarves are not meant to be moved or touched so you can get away with simple measures to secure it.
